Water and Sanitation Programme Aims, Objectives, Methodology and Activities behind the Campaign. At the dawn of the 21st century, some 1.1 billion people on Earth are still without access to a safe water supply and over 2.4 billion are without adequate sanitation. Rapid population growth during the 1990s, particularly in the world`s mega cities has meant that, by 2000, an estimated 620 million more people gained access to water supply and some 435 million more people had access to sanitation facilities. Despite laudable achievements by the sector during the International Decade for Water Supply and Sanitation (1981-1990) to meet these basic needs, there remains a tremendous backlog in terms of the billions of unserved people, mostly the poor and marginalized citizens living in squalid, unhealthy environments in the developing world.

The Water Integrity Network (WIN), formed in 2006, aims to fight corruption in the water sector. It stimulates anti-corruption activities in the water sector locally, nationally and globally. It promotes solutions-oriented action and coalition-building between civil society, the private and public sectors, media and governments.

Training combines hygiene promotion and HIV/AIDS control

She continued by thanking CEI social workers for the work done in training activities for hygiene and sanitation. And she mentioned that some topics in some trainings were integrated with those of AIDS control and living positively with HIV/AIDS without any worry. She had benefited a lot from the trainings, she added.

Diary from the field – Uganda – 4: ” Integration of watsan and AIDS activities”

This is the fourth of a new series of stories from Uganda written by Kisembo Asuman, programme co-coordinator for the Simavi-funded water and sanitation project of the Community Empowerment Initiative (CEI). Co-facilitated by IRC and Simavi.

Separate HIV/AIDS programme

She also requested me that CEI should introduce a separate programme for HIV/AIDS control in the area because people need more training on living positively with HIV/AIDS and controlling it.

I explained to her that I will see how her needs will fit in the programme and especially in the financial planning. And that I could guarantee her that we shall do it soon, we can only integrate the programmes if they suit the needs of the community.

HIV/AIDS victims

It was in the afternoon when I visited one of the villages in the project area, known as Mikole Village, where I visited one of the families. That family comprised of a widow and orphans whose head of the family died of HIV/AIDS.

As soon as I arrived at the home, the widow immediately thought that I had come to bring her assistance. She welcomed me, gave me a seat, greeted me and started explaining her personal problems concerning her sickness and also two of her young children who are suffering from HIV/AIDS.
